The Body Intelligence Scale (BIS) offers three subscale scores. Upon
completion of the BIS online questionnaire, you will receive BIS subscores
automatically.
The online BIS
questionnaire is available to Wellknowing Consulting clients and health-care
researchers and practitioners at set fees. The scale consists of 32 statements
rated on a 5-point scale and a short list of biographical questions and
requires about 10 minutes to complete.
Energy Body Awareness, Comfort Body Awareness, and Inner Body Awareness
are described below:
The “energy body” subscale measures awareness of energy inside
and surrounding your physical body. This felt-sense of energy inside and
around you can help you sense danger, avoid stressful situations, and
stay healthy. Over time, cultivating Energy Body Awareness attract more
and more people and situations that support your overall wellbeing.
Items illustrating this subscale include:
- I work to heal my body when it is out of balance.
- My body lets me know when my environment is safe.
For some, Energy Body Awareness may seem unusual or like “the sort
of thing that people in California do”. But all of us use the electromagnetic
energy field of our body whether we are aware of it or not. For example,
have you ever swerved your car into the next lane on the highway for no
logical reason and avoided an accident? Have you ever met someone for
the first time and felt that he or she would become a friend for life?
Have you ever bolted out of a subway station or alleyway because it did
not feel safe? Have you ever bought a house or rented an apartment because
it felt like a perfect fit? If so, your electromagnetic field is responding
to the electromagnetic field around you. Sometimes we are right. Sometimes
we are wrong. Nonetheless, we can improve Energy Body Awareness with attention
and practice.
This “comfort body” subscale measures feelings of comfort
and satisfaction with your body in everyday life. Instead of ignoring
discomfort or getting agitated, Comfort Body Awareness helps you feel
more relaxed, energetic, and focused. Over time, you will learn to provide
comfort for yourself in more and more healthy ways rather than coping
with discomfort and stressful situations.
Items illustrating this subscale include:
- I feel comfortable in the world most of the time.
- Certain parts of my body seem numb. (reverse item)
Comfort Body Awareness has to do with your sense of ease, relaxation,
and comfort in the world as it is. Wherever we go, we bring our sense
of bodily comfort or discomfort with us. If we are anxious within, apprehension
follows us everywhere we go. If we are relaxed within, we are more likely
to see what is delightful or possible in a situation and respond optimally
rather than out of habit. High levels of Comfort Body Awareness can also
help you know the difference between a safe and nurturing environment
and one that is dangerous, stress filled, or will just not work for you
personally.
The “inner body” subscale measures awareness of minor changes
inside the body and the relationship of these sensations to immediate
and changing circumstances. Over time, inner body awareness will help
you actively promote your overall health through new habits of attention
and action uniquely suited to the ever-changing present.
Items illustrating this subscale include:
- I can feel my body tighten up when I am angry.
- I notice when I have been in one position too long.
Inner Body Awareness has to do with your ability to know what is good
for you and what is not. Every human body is unique. Medical and other
health-care practitioners tend to talk in generalities based on statistics.
However, you can become the expert about what is good for you and what
is not and when to seek help. Only you know how a particular food, relationship,
situation, job, or environment feels inside your body. Does a particular
food give you a headache and keep you from sleeping well? Does your body
relax or tense up around certain people? By attending your body’s
tiny responses to changing circumstances, you will be the expert on what
you want and what you do not want in your life.
The three BIS subscales above were derived from a Principal Components
Factor Analysis of 200 items. Cronbach Alphas measuring inter-item consistency
for the subscales were .88, .82, and .77, respectively. The average inter-reliability
correlation for the BIS range across three samples is .70. For further
